Return to Salt Lake County Library Services
The Magna Community
Magna Street View Magna is a continually growing community and it is anticipated that the 2010 census will show the population close to 30,000 people. Magna has long been a community of diversity. Again projections are that the Latino population of Magna is close to 30%. This is a vital and important part of our community and we are committed to serving their needs better in the new library. We are also going to increase our services to children. Magna is a very young in age community and that is reflected in our circulation statistics. We plan to have more children's materials, storytimes and activities. We also plan to increase our teen activities in the same vein.
Magna History
Magna has been a community in Utah since 1850. For the first 50 years or so Magna was mainly an agricultural community and was called Pleasant Green. Around the turn of the 20th century mining came into Magna and the name of the town was changed as well as the nature of the community. A large influx of miners and the creation of mining camps and areas created a rather bustling shopping district. Main Street Magna became a vibrant and vital place and remained so for many years. Even up into the 1960's Main Street was an active center of commerce. Over the last 30-40 years Main Street has lost that economic vibrancy and deteriorated with many empty store fronts. Only a few businesses have remained to keep it alive. Over the last decade a renewed interest in Main Street has revitalized the area and brought many improvements and a new sense of hope to the community. The County Governments investment in Main Street and its people has helped this immensely. The New Magna Library is a great example of this commitment and will do much to bring in people and hopefully more business to this once vibrant street. The phrase "build it and they will come" hopefully portrays the future we envision for the library and Main Street.

Collection of Books, Movies and More
The expected Opening Day collection depends on a lot of factors, but we are planning to be somewhere around 110,000 -120,000 items. Our current collection is just under 80, 000. Movies and Music will be approximately 15,000 items, adult books will be around 40-45,000 and children's books 40-45,000. Our Young Adult collection will be about 7-8000. We will also have magazines, audiobooks and an increased Spanish Collection. Very important to the Magna community will be an increase in the number of Internet Computer stations. We will probably have twice as many as we currently have.
